01🗺️ BeforeThe apprentice with too many questionsOpen chapter
Mira copied old maps in the Amatist Mines, but she preferred the tunnels to the drawing room. She noticed when a cart wheel left a new mark, when a wall shifted by a finger's width, and when a drip stopped hitting its usual stone. The older mapmakers wished she would finish one sheet without asking ten questions.
She had no special equipment, only a notebook with bent corners and a memory for things that changed. Mira wanted the workers to trust her observations. Instead of showing them unfinished ideas, she kept trying to solve every mystery alone before anyone knew she had found one.
02💎 The turning pointThe missing dropsOpen chapter
One morning a familiar tunnel was silent. Water had always tapped against its stone floor; now it did not. Mira looked up and found a hairline crack above a work crew. She warned the foreman, but he saw an apprentice holding a notebook and told her not to stop the shift on a guess.
Mira ran back through the maps. The crack crossed three tunnel sheets, and each one placed the old escape shaft a little differently. She worked out where the shaft really met the crew's passage and returned just as the ceiling began to shake. This time she did not try to explain every line on the map. She shouted the route. The crew followed her through the only passage still open, emerging covered in dust but alive.
03⭐ The first choiceA name written on the mapOpen chapter
The miners began calling her “Amatist Girl” whenever they saw her coming with a notebook. Mira liked it, though she cared more about what changed after the collapse: workers started bringing her their own observations. Together they redrew the unsafe tunnels so nobody would walk into the same danger twice.
She kept the old map pinned above her desk. It reminded her that spotting a problem was only the beginning; she had to make people understand it in time. When water later vanished far beyond the mines, she marked each loss and traveled to 67 Lake, the last blue point on her map. That sharp eye is why Shadow's disguise does not fool her for long.
